Definition: Obesity

Obesity is a chronic condition in which there is excessive amount of body fat. A certain amount of body fat is necessary for storing energy, heat insulate, cushion, and other functions. The normal amount of body fat (expressed as percentage of body fat percentage) is between 25% -30% in women and 18% -23% in men. Women and men who have a body fat of each of more than 30% and 25% are considered obese.

The calculation of body mass index (BMI) has also been used in the definition of obesity. BMI equals weight in kilograms (kg) divided by height in meters (m) squared. Because BMI describe body weight relative to height it was highly correlated with total fat content in the body of an adult. Obesity was defined as BMI of 30 and above
